Thanks for the kind words - much appreciated.įirst off, it's great that you're thinking about investing in yourself. You can always upload to sites like rebusfarm though if you're doing intense work with heaps of GI needed. I like vray a lot despite the speed limits. Sounds like Arnold would be a good compromise for you - although vray might be good too. He also did a comprehensive summary of where render engines are currently at on the learnsquared site earlier last week. There's a great breakdown of the pros and cons by Chad Ashley here: Octane is just insanely fast (unless you're doing intense renderings with large maps that require a large number of GI bounces) I more often than not am working in 3ds Max, anyway as the studio I work with uses that primarily for production. It's just not capable of doing a lot of the stuff I do day-to-day. I shouldn't say it sucks, obviously, just being a little dramatic. If you wanna know more just PM me or check out my website at I have a blog where I recently published a livestream I did with one of the guys from learn squared that talked about hopping from render engine to render engine to optimize results. It's $20 and allows you to use 2x graphics cards at the same time. The best thing to do if you're actually looking to spend money is to purchase Octane Vr. Don't expect to have insanely fast renderings with a 970. I currently use 2 x 1070s and often struggle to get decent times when using PT or PMC for GI calculation. I really like octane but it does have severe GI limitations for complex scenes in C4d. The native render engine in c4d sucks so I'd definitely recommend going third-party if you want to bring your work to the next level. Most render engines have pros and cons and you should not put all of your eggs in one basket. I started with Vray in 3ds max and now fluently use vray, corona, octane and fstorm with relative ease. If you're going to get into cg it's a good idea to learn the fundamentals to render engines. I do cg for a living, mostly for architecture as that's my background.
